Have you dusted off your bike, lubricated the chain, inspected the brakes and checked the air pressure in the tires? Well, it is spring, time to start using pedal power. The League of American Bicyclists is promoting Bike-to-Work Week 2011 from May 16-20 and Bike-to-Work Day on Friday, May 20. It is a great time to participate in a healthy activity and help the environment while strengthening your body.
If just one person rode their bike to work one day a year they would save 1.36 gallons of gas. This reduction in gas usage is equivalent to:
0.012 metric tons of CO2
The carbon sequester by 0.31 tree seedlings grown for 10 years.
Greenhouse gas emissions avoided by recycling 8 lbs of waste instead of sending it to the landfill.
*Information is based on an average commuter: a commute of 15 miles each way driving a car that gets 22 mpg.
