Fashionably Green

It feels like it’s about time to wear six layers of clothing and bundle up for winter, but before you go out and buy a whole new wardrobe, consider purchasing from a thrift store or a consignment shop instead.   

The costs of making new clothing are quite high in terms of resources. When clothes are manufactured out of synthetic fabrics, the process requires large amounts of energy and oil. The oil can release volatile organic compounds and acid gas into the air, and these emissions have been linked to respiratory illnesses and other health problems. Even if your clothes are made from a natural fabric, such as cotton, there is still a big environmental impact in making the clothes. Cotton uses 25% of the pesticides that are used by the U.S., and requires a large amount of water during clothing production.          

While some thrift stores can be disorganized and may not have clothes that match your style, in general, thrift stores are on the rise. Sales in thrift stores are growing by 5% a year, and a survey done by America’s Research Group, in 2006, found that 12-15% of people buy from thrift stores or consignment shops. This number is likely higher today, because of people’s desire to cut costs during the recession.  Although as mentioned above, shopping at thrift stores is the more sustainable choice, you can also save money and find unique fashion options. You might  have to search harder to find what you want, but you can likely find some great green outfits at even better prices.
