Sustainability: Can I have the definition, please?

Sustainability. It’s a term that’s thrown around a lot (especially if you’ve been spending a lot of time here at the Green Dandelion) without much thought. But, what does it really mean? Is it just about recycling that soda can, instead of tossing it in the trash? Could it be referring to cutting down on shower time to conserve water? While the word sustainability encompasses those aspects, it’s much broader than many people realize.

A commonly accepted definition, which was developed by the World Commission on Environment and Development (a group brought together by the United Nations), in 1987, is as follows: Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present, without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. As this definition shows, sustainability is more than just a few directions on how to conserve resources. It’s a belief that we need to make changes in all facets in life (i.e., economic, social, and environmental changes), to allow future generations the same opportunities and resources we’ve experienced and enjoyed.

Keep checking back here for more information and tips about the little (and big) things you can do daily (and over a long time period) to conserve resources for the future, without depriving yourself.

  1. Thanks for the topic. Sustainable is an interesting topic. The law of conservation of matter would state that everything is bein conserved, just changing shape. The rate of consumption would dictate if anything is indeed sustainable.

Have a nice new year conserving.
