UR’s Recycling Percent Reaches a New Milestone

untitled

The 2009 Rochester Milestones are now available on the University’s Sustainability webpage. The milestones serve as a sort of timeline for Rocky to brag about the cool green things he has done for the year. Although 2009 has much to boast, one item that is particularly worth mentioning involves our climbing percent of recycled/reused material. The number is a percent of all the material that is saved from going to a landfill based on the total of all material that does or does not go to a landfill. It looks at the entire University community as a whole including the River Campus, Medical Center, Eastman School of Music, Memorial Art Gallery, Mt. Hope Campus, etc.

The recycling/reuse percent has risen in the past few year's.

Most of what makes up the percent is recycled material like the old familiar paper, plastic, glass, and metal as well as construction debris, scrap metal, and hazardous waste. But it also includes material that was reused or donated, like the food and clothing collected from the End of the Year Cleanout.

The number has more than doubled since 2006 partially thanks to increased education and awareness. This is also thanks to an increased effort to recycle materials on a large scale, such as in construction projects. Let’s see how much higher we can get 2010’s percent to reach!

  1. Recycling, a simple word yet has a deep meaning and uses. The worlds must realize how important it is to our Mother nature. Instead of throwing those waste materials, why not we will recycle them foe the benefits of others? Just a simple task but has a great impact to the society..Just the quote goes like this “Cleanliness starts with me”. Thank you for sharing.
