Clay’s Green Corner

Wow! Just W-O-W! The Green Corner is still basking in the afterglow of our terrific Personal Documents Round-up event last week.  Many of you took the time to recycle your documents instead of sending them to the landfill. You helped protect your identity as well as sacrificing your time to help the planet.

Some of you may remember that we at University Facilities and Services had no idea what to expect in terms of participation. We kept our fingers crossed we could fill five or ten 65-gallon totes over 8 hours. Well, there is a reason I don’t have psychic powers or go to the race track anymore. By the end of the day *you* filled 59 totes! Our vendor, Iron Mountain (awesome shout out!) weighed those totes and YOU gave us 12,390 pounds of paper!!!. Yeah, I said twelve-thousand, three-hundred and ninety POUNDS of paper. That’s more than 6 tons. Every one-ton of recycled paper saves 17 trees. Congratulations, last week you saved 102 trees! Am I using too many exclamination points????? No!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Your participation, enthusiasiam, and appreciation of this did not go un -noticied. If Iron Mountain agrees, it looks like this will be an annual event. So, start that collection all over again and we’ll be around next July to collect it. And while you are at it, don’t forget our household e-waste round-up on October  28. Thanks to all of you. You definitely rock!!!!

Unless you have been living in an igloo you know we are in the midst of a major heat wave in the east. You all know where to find tips on staying cool, hydrated, and a little more comfortable. I just want to remind you to check on your elderly friends, family and neighbors. Those with breathing difficulties also need a “drive-by” visit or call.

Rest assured that our energy management and utilities folks are working at break-neck speeds to keep the campuses cool. Our patient care areas, labs, research centers are our top priority. If your office seems a little warmer it is only because we are “load-shedding”, i.e. making sure those critical areas receive the attention they need. Please remember either here or at home, turn off unnecessary lights, power down those electronic devices, and use energy during non-peak periods. Today we are being asked to reduce energy usage from 1PM-7PM.

Heat makes some of us a little more cranky. You know that in a few months we’ll be back to shoveling and shivering (you’re welcome). When you are out and about please “chill” and be a little more patient with service providers, road/construction workers, other drivers, and everyone else. It’s a prety good habit to develop all year ’round, too.

Stay frosty!

  1. Congratulations on a great success – the first document shredding program. I truly appreciated getting rid of the 8 shoe boxes of material. It takes too long to shred it at home. Thanks!!!
