How to shop sustainable this holiday season

Tis the season to be sustainable! Black Friday is behind us and Christmas is just up ahead. The holiday season is the perfect time to make more eco-conscious gift and decoration choices. Here are some ways to be eco-friendly in your shopping decisions this season:

  1. Buy local or pre-owned

Opt to buy from small local businesses and independent stores to minimize your carbon footprint and support the local economy! Seek out local craft fairs and artisan shops to find high-quality, one-of-a-kind gifts that are handcrafted and made with care.

Buying vintage or second-hand can also add an additional layer of charm to a Christmas gift while also saving resources and reducing waste. Consider pre-loved books, music, fashion statement pieces, and homeware such as vintage crockery and antiques!

  1. Give them something they can’t hold

Sometimes an experience can be more memorable than a physical gift. Consider gifting concert tickets, theater tickets, or meal vouchers to your favorite restaurant. Other creative options to look into include hiking, yoga, and camping experiences, as well as memberships, digital subscriptions, and charitable donations to causes of their choice.

  1. Find packaging and card alternatives

Ditch traditional gift wrap and shopping bags for options such as reused paper, fabric gift bags, or recycled wrap! Also reuse ribbons, bows, and cardboard boxes. For a personalized touch, also swap out store-bought cards for homemade cards, made of last year’s calendar, or children’s (and adults’) art work.
