Student’s Corner

Working for Facilities’ Support Operations Department with the Recycling Program at the University of Rochester this summer, I am given the opportunity to help out in some pretty great events that not only provide a convenience, but also are focused on sustainability. I’ve been hanging posters around campus this summer in an effort to advertise, so you might have already heard about them. In the instance that you haven’t heard about these coming attractions, let me fill you in!

GoGreenRec

2015 University of Rochester Recycling Survey

A survey created by yours truly, along with editing from staff involved with the Recycling Program at the U of R. Relatively short, the survey is only 21 questions in length, largely multiple choice, and should take no more than 10-15 minutes. In sending out the survey, Facilities is looking to get feedback from students, faculty, and staff on/employed at the University of Rochester’s River Campus about their understanding of the University’s recycling rules and their opinions of campus recycling. Using information collected through the survey, steps will then be taken to improve upon how recycling is advertised on campus and work towards future clarity and effectiveness of new recycling efforts. Your thoughts are invaluable to us, so please be sure to take just a few minutes to fill this out. Those students living in Susan B. Anthony this summer can expect to see this survey in their email relatively soon, however the survey link will be provided on class facebook pages, sent via email, and hand delivered in some cases. This is an excellent opportunity to have your voice be heard in bettering the University. Please note again however, that this survey is intended for only students, faculty and staff who are currently a part of the U of R River Campus, which doesn’t include: Medical Center, MAG, ESM, any off-site locations, or incoming freshman (Class of 2019). If you are part of the University of Rochester River Campus, click here to participate in the survey.

ShredFest 2015final

ShredFest 2015

Coming back for the 5th year in a row, ShredFest has become increasingly more popular and well attended every year! This event is a chance for anyone to come with their important confidential documents that they no longer need and have them securely destroyed and recycled. All you need to do is to bring your documents on Friday, July 17th from 7am-3pm in Park Lot. Just pull in with your car and our volunteers will do the rest! You can watch as your documents are locked away in toters that are then taken into an Iron Mountain Truck and shredded. Staples, rubber bands, and small folders are okay to be included, however please see the poster for items not to bring. If you have any questions, be sure to contact Amy Kadrie, the University’s Recycling Coordinator, at amy.kadrie@rochester.edu or (585)-362-5739. We look forward to seeing you there!

Nike Reuse-a-Shoe

Currently our highlighted program, Nike Reuse-a-Shoe is offered through Nike, in which the company’s retail stores take old, worn out sneakers and shreds them into foam, rubber, and fabric pieces to then be used in creating turf fields, sport courts, and running tracks. Our campus collects sneakers/tennis shoes to be recycled through this program in bins that are located in the locker rooms of the Goergen Athletic Center. If you have sneakers that you no longer wear and are looking to get rid of please consider dropping them off to be recycled!

With so many programs and opportunities to be green at the University of Rochester, don’t miss your chance to make a real impact one answer, paper, or shoe at a time. Check back in at the Green Dandelion or UR Sustainable facebook page and make sure to keep a look out for more program advertisements in the coming months.
