Clay’s Green Corner

Greetings Green Corner company! The Corner has been out and about the past couple of weeks taking what she believes is a well-deserved vacation (perhaps more for her co-workers), so here are some odds-n-ends as we wind down another school year:

Our current percentage of diverting materials from the waste stream/landfill rose to 32% at the University of Rochester. Considering UR is the largest employer in Rochester with 19,000 employees and our campus includes a 750 bed hospital (Strong Memorial Hospital), plus medical research buildings as well as our River Campus, this is an amazing accomplishment. Everyone here makes a difference; from Amy Kadrie, our recycling guru to you and the choice you make to dispose of that can in its proper container, it all counts. Thanks and let’s see that number climb higher next year.

Another newsworthy event at SMH was earlier this year when we ceased using paper and moved to electronic record keeping for our patient records. This initiative was HUGE. Our crackerjack Medical Center Facilities Operations (MCFO) staff installed 655  (1200 total) computer carts in 100 patient units; mounted 135 wall computers as well as 83 mounted printers (well, we can’t go totally paper-free, now can we), plus upgrading our electrical systems to handle this transition. Great job, Mark Schwartz, and the entire MCFO team!

And speaking of paper……we have a date for our household personal paper shredding event: July 15. Please stop by, we’d love to see you all. More info to follow.

If you hurry you can still participate in the Bike-to-work day on Friday, May 20. I will be cheering you on from my internal combustion engine contraption. When the Corner gets on a bike, she has to stop at SMH cardiology first! But I know you will all do fine!

Finally, a hearty congratulations to the Class of 2011. The weather didn’t exactly cooperate (cool and rainy), but it didn’t dampen your spirit and enthusiasm.

Now, go do good things.
