Clay’s Corner

Earth lovers! Your humble blogger is singing from the highest hills (no, that’s not someone stepping on a cat’s tail) about the University of Rochester’s Annual Household E-Waste Round-Up. For the third year we have set aside the last Friday in October to collect outdated, old, funky computers and other electronics. Partnering with our vendor, SunnKing the University community comes together and brings in these items so they may be disposed of in an environmentally friendly way. No landfill for all this *stuff*!

What’s amazing is how much we collected this year. In 2008, we collected 24,000 pounds; in 2009 we saved 26,000 pounds from the landfill. This year we took in 35,000 pounds! Yes, 35,000 pounds as in  over 17 tons, 54 pallets, 5 truckloads of unwanted electronics that did not go in the trash. Awesomeness abounds!

So, who to thank? Well how about the members of the UR community; faculty, staff, healthcare workers, administrators, students. Take a bow, be proud. You made the effort to bring in 35,000 pounds (did I mention we collected 35,000 pounds) of unwanted electronics. YOU helped save the planet that day!

A shout-out to the volunteers who saw more computers in one day than most see in a lifetime: UR students, you are the coolest of the cool; staff, you rock, SunnKing, you rule.

We love this event because you make it happen. If you missed us this year; no worries. Mark your calendars for Friday,October 28  2011. We’ll be waiting for you.
