Did you know that the University is an established Arboretum, and has been since 1999?
Our own Dan Schied, manager of horticulture and grounds here at the university, is constantly working to preserve the “arboricultural legacy” of the Rochester area, which started in the 1800’s and once made Rochester the largest tree “nursery trade” area in the country. Because of this heritage, our grounds department has made it their mission to plant and care for trees which showcase the natural beauty of native species, and to provide an opportunity for ongoing education about the university and regional horticulture.
The Result? In both spring and fall, the university abounds with an entire spectrum of colors as leaves change color or flowers come into bloom. In spring, the Kwanzan Cherries by Hoyt Auditorium give a subtle, sweet scent, and in the fall, the changing leaves light up campus with the overtones of autumn. In truth, we have a lot to thank Dan and his department for – they make our campus not only beautiful year round, but a safe haven for some of the most rare and interesting trees in the area.
And even more importantly – they give tours! If you didn’t know about our Arboretum and want to know more about the trees that you are surrounded by, tours are being offered this Friday in honor of Meliora Weekend, and the beautiful fall season – free of charge!
If you can’t make it this Friday but still want a tour, or even if you just want more information on the history of the grounds here on River Campus, check out the Arboretum page on the university website for more information. And remember, if it weren’t for our ever loyal friends from horticulture and grounds, fall and spring would be much less colorful. Thanks for your dedication, guys!

We would like a group of new employees take the tour this summer.
Please call me or reply with times we can do this.
Thank you very much!
