Clay’s Corner

Happy Friday, Earthlings! Schools all over (public, private, colleges, high schools, etc.) are underway and some students are hitting the books and some are hitting the athletic fields while others dream of hitting the lottery (helpful hint- hit the books, your chances of being a winner are much higher).

It’s at this time of year when we plan for one of our biggest events that is for the entire University of Rochester community, not just students. That event is our annual E-waste round-up. All staff, faculty and students are invited to dispose of their old home computer and electronic equipment in an environmentally friendly manner. On the business side of UR we are very strict about how we properly dispose of departmental data information. All through the year our vendor will pick up University property and sanitize/destroy hard drives and recycle equipment. We wanted to extend the same opportunity to our staff  so they may get rid of unwanted equipment in a safe, secure and sustainable manner. Once a year we hold a day long event where folks clean out that basement/garage/attic and bring their equipment to us where they are greeted by friendly UR volunteers (yours truly, too), who empty your vehicles for you.  You drive away knowing you helped the planet that day.

Last year we collected over 26,000 pounds of electronics!!!!!!

For the UR community, look for announcements as our round-up will be Friday, October 29, 2010. We’ll get the word out and answer any questions you have.

For those of you reading this and are not here at UR, we strongly encourge you to call your local municipality and ask  how you may avoid the landfill with electronics.
