Clay’s Corner

Judy ClayGreetings lovers of nature! If you’re a regular ’round these parts you know The Green Dandelion is dedicated to bringing you news of sustainability intiatives and recycling efforts that members of the University of Rochester’s Facilities and Services staff support and encourage. Sometimes there are procedures and processes that don’t appear, at first to fit into our purpose; but upon further inspection illustrate that good, solid business sense is not at odds with sustainability.

A terrific example is happening right here on our campuses. Chris Howe, a supervisor at Central Utilities has employed the newest techonology in repairing manholes. So what, huh? Well ponder this: repairing manholes takes time and can get quite costly. Plus it is aggravating to drivers who commute on roads that lack repairs and tender loving care. When the repairs do happen, you are stuck in traffic, grumbling and wasting fuel. Not a good combination. Chris has discovered a company called Mr Manhole (I swear I’m not making this up…..) that utilizes the latest in technology and innovation in reparing this all important aspect of our infrastructure in less time and reduces cost. Traditionally reparing one manhole would take two days (tear out the old/bring in the new). Using Mr. Manhole has allowed Central Utilities to now fully repair one manhole in ONE hour! Now up to seven manholes may be repaired in a single day, reducing fuel consumption and your irritation level. It’s a win-win.

We’re proud of people like Chris and his wonderful staff. University Facilities and Services is dedicated to using innovative solutions in making our planet a better world. Oh, and a tip o’ the hat to Mr. Manhole, too.
