Notes about recycling at URMC

Flaum Atrium 003

Since recycling at the UR Medical Center can be a bit more of a challenge than it is on the River Campus, I wanted to take a moment to emphasize what options are available to us all as avid recyclers.  This is also the perfect time to announce the brand new addition of recycling containers in SMD’s Flaum Atrium.

First, why is it more difficult to place containers throughout the MC than in the RC?  The reason is a combination of challenges including stricter fire code restrictions, patient safety/sanitation concerns, material flow logistics, and lack of available funding for collection containers. Additionally, recycling collection for plastic, metal, and glass (most commonly bottles and cans) is more difficult to implement on a wide spread basis than it is for paper and cardboard collection.  Although we are all supposed to do our part by rinsing out and removing the caps from our cans and bottles before placing them in a recycling bin, this often does not happen.  As a result fruit flies and other vectors may be attracted (yuck!).  Patient, visitor and staff well-being is our primary concern. We will continue to benchmark with other healthcare centers that have successfully eliminated this pesky problem.

But luckily there are four main locations that any employee or visitor can bring bottles and cans to in the MC. The option in SMH is the House of Six Nations Cafeteria where you can place these items on the conveyor belt system.  Behind the scenes the staff will separate these items out and put them aside to be recycled.  The next two places to go are the MRB Café and the Courtyard Café where you will find collection containers that have green lids with circular holes on top designed for you to place your bottles/cans in.

Now, the Flaum Atrium boasts four brand new and very attractive stainless steel containers.  In addition to this area being a main entrance where many employees enter and exit from, visitors from all over the world also pass through this high profile area to attend events and conferences.  The design is such that bottles and cans, paper, and trash can be collected all in one unit to make it more convenient for passers by to put their items in the proper place. The 2 units on the ground level along with the 2 on the atrium’s upper level help to show that recycling is indeed a priority at URMC.

  1. Thanks for the ideas you have discussed here. Something else I would like to convey is that pc memory needs generally increase along with other improvements in the technological innovation. For instance, when new generations of processors are introduced to the market, there is certainly usually a similar increase in the size and style demands of all laptop memory and also hard drive room. This is because the software program operated by these processors will inevitably increase in power to make use of the new engineering.
