Energy Use Takes a Winter Break

(Go Green Article February, 2009)

University Facilities and Services launched an energy conservation program in student housing and other River Campus during the winter break from December 24 to January 6. Temperatures in the dorms and campus buildings were reduced, lights were turned off, and equipment was shut down or set back.

  • The energy savings were the equivalent of running one bulb for 112 years, or powering 988,000 standard incandescent 60-watt lightbulbs for one hour.
  • That equals a reduction in carbon emission by 103 tons.
  • The adjustments led to a savings of about $18,000.

Facilities and Services plans to launch the program again during spring break in March.
