If you haven’t done so already, it is time to update your lighting. Using compact fluorescent lamps can reduce your energy use in light fixtures by up to 70%. The cost of these lamps has come down drastically, and you will make up for the cost with energy savings in no time at all. There are a few things to think about before you go shopping.
Make sure you know what size lamp will fit into the fixture. Often compact fluorescent lamps are larger than standard lamps.
If you have a three way fixture, you will need a three way compact fluorescent. They are now readily available in your local hardware or home improvement store.
If you are using the compact fluorescent in a dimmable fixture, you will need a dimmable compact fluorescent. These lamps tend to be more expensive.
Be aware. Compact fluorescent lamps contain mercury. When they break take special precaution when cleaning, follow the guidelines on the EPA’s website: http://www.epa.gov/hg/spills/#fluorescent
Compact fluorescent lamps typically do not work well outdoors or in a very cold environment. Check the package for the temperature guidelines.
Once you have completed your shopping and installed your new lamps, you can enjoy the savings. If you replace one 65W incandescent lamp with one 16W compact fluorescent and you pay $0.10/kWh, you will save $21.46 per year and reduce CO2 by 287 lbs. per year. Now, those are savings you can take to the bank!

Great tips, the last time i went to buy some lightbulbs i was actually quite shocked to see how cheap the energy efficent bulbs are these days, so people have no excuses now!
