Clay’s Corner

Blog buds! The usual Friday post was delayed due to some computer thingy issues/gremlins. So isn’t this a grand way to start the week (oh, please wipe that little smirk off your face, the Corner doesn’t get out as much as she used to).

Be thankful this isn’t a podcast, cause we’d be singing the praises of ALL members of the UR community/campuses who contributed to our ever increasing recycling rate.

Our overall recycling rate rose 3.3% from 2009-2010 and we now divert 32.2% of our waste from landfills to recycling centers. This.Is.So.Cool. Just five short years ago we hovered in the low double figures. These efforts don’t occur without the dedication and hard work of thousands, yes thousands of students, staff, faculty, visitors, patients and countless others.

The addition of the recycling coordinator position certainly helped. But the person behind that position, Amy Kadrie has done a terrific job of communicating, energizing others, building bridges, collapsing barriers and getting all of us to look at the big picture. Her tireless efforts are an inspiration to all of us, especially those of us in University Facilities and Services.

Next, is the commtiment of the UR Sustainability Council to ‘keeping our eyes on the prize’. This diverse team of staff, faculty, administrators, and students from all campuses guide our overall approach as we are continually challenged to improve.

Finally, it’s all of YOU! You put the empty can in the right container. You break down the cardboard. You see to it that paper doesn’t get trashed. You keep it going. So take a minute to congratulate yourself on a job well done. We, of course are looking to do even better in 2011. I have no doubt we will.
