Clay’s Corner

Earth-huggers! This Sunday is The Corner’s favorite holiday. Hard to believe another Super Bowl is here. Hope you’ve sent your cards and brought gifts for your friends and loved ones. Oh wait, maybe that’s just me. Anyway, when the top two teams from America’s favorite sport battle for World Champion even non-football fans tune in to see what’s in store.  Hey, I’m sure a lot of you watch just for the commercials, and don’t care about The Game. Shame on you, but enjoy anyway.

Being America’s number one secular holiday means lots of social gatherings. If you are hosting one, attending one or just sitting at home with your cats watching a Lifetime movie marathon don’t forget about recycling and sustainability. Being ever vigilant is a full time responsibility as a steward of our planet.

Having a party? Great! What time should I show up? Um……..for your party, plan how to get your guests to recycle their beverage cans and bottles with as little hassle as possible. That might mean putting out some medium size boxes clearly marked for cans and bottles. Got kids? Get them to decorate the boxes. No kids to put to work? Mark your boxes for each team. For example if most of your friends are Green Bay fans, mark boxes with their colors and write “Packers are recycling and football champions”. For garbage cans/boxes mark it “Steelers are for Trash”. You can help the earth and start fights at the same time! Fun!

Just don’t think about cans and bottles; channel that game day energy into using plates/cups/utensils that are washable/reusable or if you are using disposable, use the most environmentaly friendly materials out there. And did you know that most areas accept pizza boxes as a recyable? Check with your county if not sure.

If you are having folks over, turn down your thermostat. The collective body heat, plus the joy of winning and the agnoy of defeat will heat up your place. Can we get energy credits for this? If you are attending a party, make sure you turn your themostat down, since most folks are home on Sunday evenings. You might forget to do so. And if you’re watching Lifetime with your cats, snuggle with them under a comfy blanket. Every little bit helps.

Enjoy the game, and please, please, please don’t drink and drive. Get that designated driver lined up. I’d hate if you were not here hanging at the Corner next week.

Oh and you know who I’m rooting for? It’s a no brainer it’s the……..oh, gotta go. See ya next Friday.
