Urban Farming

Urban Farming began in 2005 with 3 gardens and a pamphlet and there are now over 58,000 farms. According to the website, the mission of the Urban Farming initiative “was to create an abundance of food for people in need by supporting and encouraging the establishment of gardens on unused land and space while increasing diversity, raising awareness for health and wellness, and inspiring and educating youth, adults and seniors to create an economically sustainable system to uplift communities around the globe.” The initiative comprises of a global vision to abundantly create food for all generations. The initiative falls under the “Global Urban Farming 100 Million Families and Friends Campaign™” which aims to encourage 100 Million people to plant and register their gardens. This campaign is supposed to be beneficial to everyone, from the unemployed to the people with unhealthy diets. It also aims to give people an opportunity to be trained and educated on healthy lifestyles. At the University, students have established the UR Microfarm which grows product sustainably and sells it to the Meliora Restaurant on Campus.
