In analogy to radio antennas, optical antennas convert propagating optical radiation into localized excitations and vice versa. They show promise in energy harvesting, light emission, and microscopy applications. But while the use of radio and microwave antennas is quite widespread, optical antennas are still emerging as a viable technology. In this talk, I explore applications of optical antennas, challenges in their development, and review current research in the field.
