Brian Golding from McMaster University is in town tomorrow for a seminar titled “Lateral gene transfer and variable rates of evolution in bacterial genome evolution.” Happy hour with Naked Dove beer will follow Dr. Golding’s presentation.

David Sheets from Canisius College is in town this Friday to discuss “Approaches to characterizing ontogenetic patterns in closely related species using geometric morphometric techniques.” His seminar is at 3PM in Hutch 316. Dr. Sheets has published extensively on geometric morphometrics, including studies of everything from human teeth (DOI link) to damselfish (DOI link). He also coauthored the book Geometric Morphometrics for Biologists.
Rob Unckless from the Jaenike and Orr Labs is defending his thesis on “Parasitic elements, extinction and adaptation: theoretical and empirical investigations” tomorrow morning at 11AM in Computer Science 209. I hope he passes because we’ve already scheduled a party for Friday night at Bob Minckley’s house…

Michael Turelli from UC Davis is in town today and tomorrow. He’s giving a talk this afternoon (Thursday) at 3:30PM in Hutch 473 on “Cytoplasmic incompatibility and the rapid spread and evolution of Wolbachia infections: an update on data, theory and an ongoing attempt to control dengue fever.”
UPDATE: The seminar was originally (and mistakenly) listed as taking place 3, 3:30 is the correct time.
Trudy Mackay of North Carolina State University is in town next Monday to talk about “Systems Genetics of Complex Traits in Drosophila.” The seminar is at noon in Hutch 473. The Mackay Lab has a great web page, check it out for more details on their research.
Sarah Kingan’s seminar on “Divergence population genomics of the Drosophila simulans clade” has been postponed due to Spring break. Sarah is working to re-schedule this seminar now, hopefully for date later this semester.
