New Paper on Speciation in the virilis Group

One of the papers published in the special issue on “Mechanisms of Speciation” by the International Journal of Evolutionary Biology is a report on postmating, prezygotic reproductive isolation in the virilis group of Drosophila by Yasir Ahmed-Braimah (Orr Lab) and Bryant McAllister (University of Iowa). In it, they characterize the strong gametic incompatibility observed between a young species pair in the virilis phylad.

Journal Club 9/27

This week we will be discussing Maynard Smith’s argument on how adaptive proteins evolve through protein sequence space. The paper is a short one and I think reading Salisbury’s article will help to understand JMS’s argument better.

Journal Club Fall 2011- Sep 20th

For the second session of Journal Club this semester we will read select pages from Ronald A. Fisher’s The Genetical Theory of Natural Selection (pp. 38-42 in 1930 edition, pp. 41-45 in 1958 edition) and Sewall G. Wright’s 1932 Genetics paper “The roles of mutation, inbreeding, crossbreeding, and selection in evolution”.

Evolution Pub Club: First Meeting this Friday, June 3rd, at 3:30 p.m.

The Evolution Pub Club will kick off this Friday at 3:30 pm at Sheridan’s Irish Pub with an article from the latest issue of Evolution. Since I will not be there this Friday, I will “randomly” pick a paper for discussion:

Wiens, J. J. (2011). Re-Evolution of Lost Mandibular Teeth in Frogs after more than 200 Million Years, and Re-Evaluating Dollo’s Law. Evolution [doi link]

Evolution Pub Club

Some of us in the department would like to start a summer “Evolution Pub Club,”reading a paper a week from the latest issue of Evolution at Sheridan’s Irish Pub. We will pick four articles from each month’s issue for discussion in that month. The general goal here is to read more broadly and stay up to date on content published in that journal. We can decide to meet for lunch or happy hour during the week or on Friday. Sheridan’s is a very nice Irish Pub which serves great food and of course pours a very appropriate pint of Guinness, among other things. It’s about a 20 minute walk, or a 7 minute bike ride. Please send me an email (yasir.ahmed@rochester.edu) if you are interested, and let me know what day/time you would prefer.
