Campus Race to Zero Waste Competition Progress
This year’s competition is about halfway complete, with only three more events left! For the twelfth year in a row, the University is participating in the annual Campus Race to Zero Waste competition (formerly known as RecycleMania). Hundreds of colleges across the United States and Canada join hands during this eight-week-long competition to prompt sustainability and waste reduction through recycling programs.
The University’s Campus Race to Zero Waste promotional campaign is led by Facilities Team Green who is working with co-sponsors Grassroots, GreenSpace, SEESS, SAVVY, 2024 Class Council, Alpha Phi Omega, Gamma Phi Beta, Delta Upsilon, Beta Theta Pi, and Order of Omega. The group has put together a fun-filled line-up of events to educate and engage the University community both on and off-campus.
The in-person kick-off event catered to students on campus and grasped the attention of many students walking by Wilson Commons. Members of the University community engaged with each other during the Valentine’s Day Selfie Challenge and Expression Wall events by sharing sustainability habits and ways to make the world a better place. Many students tuned into the documentary showing of The Pollinators where we learned about the importance of bees and the issues they face.
We’d like to thank those who have participated in the competition so far and would like to encourage everyone to partake in our upcoming events. An easy way to do so is to add our competition frame to your Facebook Profile to show all your friends how much you support the University’s sustainability initiatives. For a chance to win a solar power bank, tag @URSustainable by March 27th.
Another way to get involved is to join GreenSpace’s Recycle the Runway event held virtually via Zoom on Saturday, March 20th at 1 pm EST. The meeting ID is 973 8611 7195. Please note that this updated information is different from what is listed on the poster below. The final event of the competition will be an online bingo night. Friends can join the event to test their luck and win some fun prizes.
More details for the event can be found on our social media pages: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram.
