Announcing Shred Fest 2020

On Friday, August 7, University Facilities and Services will hold the tenth annual Shred Fest, from 6:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Zone 3 South. This year extra safety precautions will be taken in light of COVID-19. Please be sure to wear a mask! University faculty, staff, students, and alumni can drop off up to five boxes or bags of unwanted personal documents, including bills, bank statements, tax records, and more, which will be securely shredded and recycled by Iron Mountain.

We are committed to maintaining a safe event and have established additional health and safety measures this year as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. All participants, including customers, are required to wear a mask at all times at the event site. Customers are asked to remain seated inside their vehicles as volunteers unload material. If you wish to unload your materials personally or witness your documents being shredded, please be sure to clear that with event staff first. Event staff will take additional safety measures including health screenings, proper PPE and social distancing requirements. In order to provide the most efficient and timely service possible, there is a limit of five boxes or bags per person.

Many people worry about placing personal documents out for curbside pick-up at home because it could put their personal information at risk. Shred Fest provides a solution to this fear, as documents are handled and disposed of in a secure manner. At the event, volunteers will unload your car and place your documents into a locked container. Once the container is full, it will be sent up a chute into an Iron Mountain truck to be securely shredded. If you wish to witness your items being shredded, please request the viewing when you are met by our volunteers. It is important that you remain inside your vehicle until you have received instruction from event staff. Please allow extra time for this.

The event is also environmentally responsible, as all shredded paper collected is recycled. Boxes and plastic bags that carry documents are also collected and recycled.

There is no need to remove staples, paper clips, or rubber bands from the documents. However larger metals, phone books, hardcover books, plastics, trash, or departmental items are not allowed. As the event will only accept personal items, please call the Facilities Customer Service Center at 273-4567 if your department needs to confidential shredding services.
