DIY Hand Warmers

Instead of purchasing single-use hand warmers to keep you warm this winter, try making your own with this do-it-yourself project. Single-use products contribute to our already hefty amount of waste, but reusable products can greatly reduce that. Not only will this save your wallet, but the environment too! Plus, these cute hand warmers are a great gift idea for friends, family, and even your kids’ teachers.

What you’ll need:

  • Fabric (for an even more sustainable project, try to reuse old materials like a used t-shirt or baby blanket)
  • Thread and needle
  • ½ cup rice
  • Pinking shears (optional)

Step 1: Cut two 4” x 4” squares out of your fabric. If your fabric is thin, you may want to double layer them.

Step 2: Sew three sides of the square.

Step 3: Fill your pouch with rice and sew the opening

Step 4 (optional): Cut the edges with pinking shears to keep the fabric from fraying

Heat the hand warmers in the microwave for 20 seconds and put in your mittens and pockets. Reheat as necessary.
