As I write this while packing for spring break, I started to think about how much waste we produce when traveling. From airport food to little plastic bags for toiletries, going on a plane, or any kind of travel, can produce more waste than you think. Here are a few simple ways to cut down on your waste when packing for a trip:
- Bring reusable plastic bags. Instead of packing your toiletries and other small items in single-use plastics, invest in a reusable plastic bag. They last long and are easy to clean in case you get any food in them
- Bring a tote bag on your travels. This way you always have an alternative to single-use plastic or paper bags when you go shopping. It also provides more storage in case you pack too much.
- Bring your own utensils when you travel. This is a convenient way to always have utensils wherever you go, and will significantly cut down the amount of plastic you use when travelling.
- Walk and use public transportation as much as possible. Services like taxis may be convenient, but all that driving adds up. Also, walking and using public transportation is a great way to immerse yourself in the local culture and see different areas.
Travelling can be very unsustainable. Don’t be afraid to get creative and think of ways to be helpful to the planet while exploring it.
