GameDay Recycling Challenge 2018 Results

We did it again!! For the fourth year in a row, the University has maintained its status in running a true zero-waste event during the GameDay Recycling Challenge held during our homecoming football game.

A tremendous THANK YOU to everyone who took part in this event. We were well staffed with “zero waste ranger” volunteers between our EcoReps and other students, our partners from Waste Management, and staff from the University Mail Services team. Dining Services planned ahead to provide compostable material in Concessions and we successfully collected material from the catered Alumni Tailgating event held in the newly renovated meeting room of Fauver as well. BIG thanks to Willie and Carol in Environmental Services, and to Randy and crew in Grounds who were instrumental in collecting the waste. The baseball team was fantastic in cleaning up the stands and sorting the waste accordingly. And of course, thanks to Athletics & Recreation for continuing to make this event a priority and accommodating all of our needs. This could not happen without all of you!!

As a result, we continued our movement as a true zero-waste event with a waste diversion rate of 91.7%! In total we collected 699 pounds of recyclables (.3 pounds per person), 60 pounds of compostables (.02 pounds per person), and just 68.6 pounds of trash. The event resulted in a greenhouse gas reduction of 1.04 MTCO2E.
