Get Ready for Shred Fest 2016!

On Friday, July 22 University Facilities and Services is holding its sixth annual Shred Fest from 6:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. With the help of Iron Mountain— a company specializing in secure document shredding– items such as bills, bank statements, tax records, newspapers, and magazines will be securely shredded and diverted from the landfill. University faculty, staff, and students alike are encouraged to drop off any unwanted personal documents for secure shredding and recycling during the scheduled event hours.

Iron Mountain’s shred truck will be on-site beginning at 6:30 a.m. in Park Lot. You can even view your documents being shredded on the truck’s screen. Last year, over the course of the event, nearly 15,000 pounds of documents were securely shredded! Check out our informational video to see the shred truck in action.

Justifiably, many people fear that home disposal of important documents will put their personal or confidential information at risk. To avoid this concern, rather than throwing documents into a trash can or letting them collect dust at home, bring them to Shred Fest! There, your personal information will be destroyed and handled in an eco-friendly way.

Upon entering the event, volunteers will be standing by to help unload your car. Paper documents received will be securely locked into a container, then sent up a chute into the shred truck for secure shredding. If you wish to witness the shredding of your documents, simply ask one of the Shred Fest event volunteers when your car is unloaded. Please allot extra time for viewing.

The Shred Fest places no limits on the amount of paper you drop off. Last year, a staff member brought 30 years’ worth of personal documents to shred! It is not necessary to remove staples, paper clips or rubber bands from documents. However, large binders, phone books, hardcover books, plastics, metals, trash, or departmental items will not be accepted. If your department has a need for confidential shredding, please call the Facilities Customer Service Center at 273-4567 for details.
