Student’s Corner

Hey, guys! I hope you all had a great Halloween and start of a new month. As you’re probably aware, this weekend was also Daylight Saving Time. So, one of the main intentions of daylight saving was to conserve energy. The idea is that if there is more light at the end of the day, less energy will be needed (think along the lines of more time spent doing other things and using less electricity for lights). It turns out, daylight saving doesn’t actually have this effect at all; in fact, it may actually have the exact opposite effect. Perhaps it does decrease the amount of electricity used by lights during this time (although probably not by much, if at all), but it fails to take into account the changes in things like heating and cooling, which consume much more in terms of energy resources. Maybe we should take some advice from Arizona and just stop participating in this silly practice. Let’s all just get up earlier and enjoy the sunshine while we have it. Wishful thinking, I know. Have a great week, folks! Stay curious.
