With Halloween being only a day away, most people have probably already decided what to dress up as and have picked out their costumes. However, if you are like me and wait until the last minute to do and plan everything, you may not have. Fear not. Here are some tips for creating last minute and eco-friendly Halloween costumes that you can make using things lying around your house or dorm.

  1. Use clothes that you already own. Reducing the amount of goods we buy is a key element of sustainability. If you don’t have a certain article of clothing, ask a friend or neighbor if they do and if you could borrow it for the weekend.
  2. If you do need to purchase clothes, look at thrift stores. Thrift stores reuse and resell clothes that have been donated, making them sustainable businesses. When you are done with your costume, you can donate the clothes back to the store so someone else might use them.
  3. Buy props and accessories that can be used year after year. In some cases when props are necessary, and cannot be made, you have no other choice but to purchase them. When buying these items, consider if you will use th

em more than once. The down fall to most Halloween costumes is that they are purchased and used for only one day of the year and then forgotten about or thrown away.

  4. Make your own costume out of tin foil, cardboard, sheets, or paper. Afterwards, you can recycle your costume! Using materials that you already have lying around is a fun and creative way to reduce your impact on the planet.
