The Fall 2015 semester is now in full swing and it all feels a bit surreal. Classes have started and I’m pretty excited about my schedule for this semester. I’m actually taking five classes that all relate to sustainability in some way (some more obviously than others), which I think will be very interesting. I’ll tell you how they went at the end of the semester, but here’s a quick rundown of what I will be learning and mentioning to you for the next few months:
ECO 108 – Principles of Economics
Economics is a huge part of sustainability. We are studying the “Economic Way of Thinking” in this class, which is useful in all aspects of life.
ECO 238 – Environmental Economics
Yep, I’m taking this class and its prerequisite (108) concurrently, and with the same professor. It will be interesting, but this class digs even deeper into the environmental aspects of economics.
EES 213 – Hydrology
The study of water. It sounds fairly mundane when stated like this, but there is actually so much to it. Obviously, water is relevant to sustainability because it is necessary to sustain life.
PSC 246 – Environmental Law and Policy
This one should be interesting. We will learn about policies that have been put into place in the U.S. since the early 1970s that have to do with the environment and how they work.
PHL 103 – Contemporary Moral Problems
This class doesn’t directly relate to sustainability, but it provides a way of thinking about it if one does consider it to be a “moral problem.” Moral obligations will be discussed in this class which is probably worth thinking about when looking at environmental issues.
I hope everyone else had a great first week of classes. I’ll see you guys in the library.
