Announcing the Seventh Annual E-Cycle Day

It is time to mark your calendars for the seventh annual E-Cycle Day event! On Friday, October 24th from 6:30 am to 2:00 pm in Park Lot on the River Campus, University of Rochester’s Facilities and Services will be providing a place for employees and students to safely and conveniently recycle any unwanted personal electronics.

Acceptable items include computer monitors and equipment, printers, scanners, televisions, cellphone chargers, video equipment, electronic cords, tablets, and other small items. Appliances containing Freon, such as refrigerators and air conditioners, as well as broken CRTs, alkaline batteries, CDs, DVDs, and tapes will not be accepted at this event. For a more detailed list of acceptable items, click here.

Over the past six years, E-cycle day has been a huge success, together collecting over 150,000 lbs. of electronic waste. Last year alone, the event gathered approximately 25,000 lbs. of used technologies.

The successes of these events however, have not been without help of the University’s partner, Sunnking, a Brockport based, electronic recycling company. The business works to “comply with environmental, health, and safety legal requirements, both domestically and internationally, that are applicable to the recyclers’ operations.” Sunnking has acquired an R2 certification, registration with the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation under the NYS Electronic Equipment Recycling and Reuse Act, and observes HIPAA, FACTA, and NIST 800-88 regulations. Sunnking’s standards of hard drive wiping and shredding ensure that all personal information on those electronics is erased, eliminating instances of identity theft.

While the E-Cycle day is an extended service to generate an easy, one-stop recycling site for the University of Rochester community, it is designed for recycling personal electronics. To recycle departmental and University-owned technologies, University IT offers a drop off and pickup service that has also recycling over 300,000 lbs. of old equipment to date. In case you unfortunately cannot attend E-Cycle Day, you can visit Monroe County’s Ecopark, a “one-stop drop-off” recycling collection center in the Rochester area.

Past E-Cycle days have received “rave reviews,” making getting rid of those old, cluttering electronics painless and ecofriendly! So come stop by Park Lot (on Intercampus Drive) on October 24th between the hours of 6:30 am to 2:00 pm to e-cycle with us! The event will be held rain, snow or shine, but the drive-through setup makes participating easy.
