SPRING into Spring Cleaning

Each year around this time we look forward to the anticipation of warmer weather, sunshine, and clearer skies, also known as spring. This year spring officially showed its face on March 20, 2014. Although it may not have been as apparent here in the ROC, due to the incredibly long and cold winter days, there is still hope that it is just around the corner. Along with the much awaited change in seasons comes the dreaded and sometimes daunting task of spring cleaning. Every year the University of Rochester holds a Move-Out Clean-Out event at the end of April, lasting about 3 weeks. This is an opportunity for students to donate any unwanted food, clothing, shoes, and electronics to local community organizations for reuse and recycling. Keeping this in mind and with the end of the semester fast approaching it would be a good idea to get a head start on your spring cleaning now rather than later.

As you begin the cleaning process, here are some safe, sustainable tips and ideas for a smooth and less daunting cleaning experience. Start by rearranging the furniture. This will give you an opportunity to see what has been hiding behind that dresser or under that bed. Once you have done this, you are ready to reduce the clutter that has accumulated over time. Start by organizing and sorting through your belongings and create three piles: Recycle/Donate/Sell Pile these are items such as, books, magazines, clothing, shoes, electronics, furniture, rugs, non-perishable food items, etc… that you no longer want but can be donated or sold for purposes of reuse or recycling; Stay Pile – these are items you wish to keep and take home with you at the end of the semester; and Trash Pile – this is the waste that is left over that cannot be recycled or reused. Now you are ready to clean and wipe away the access dirt and dust that has settled on the tops of your belongings with all-natural, eco-friendly cleaning solutions. Utilize supplies that are safe, inexpensive, and easy to use. You can make your own non-toxic cleaning solutions using products like fresh lemon, vinegar and baking soda. Instead of paper towels, opt for cloth rags cut from an old sheet or shirt. Finally, have fun with it, put on your favorite playlist of music, make it as upbeat as possible, and put the SPRING back into spring cleaning!

  1. As for me i always do a check every month and move all my unused clothes to the bottom of the rack and arrange to donate it.

This is an awesome article. Thanks for sharing.

  2. Making your own cleaning solution and doing the cleaning task would be very economic but there are experts who could do the task so you could focus more on with your family bonding during spring season. A messy carpet for example needs a carpet cleaning expert so you won’t damage you carpet.

  3. Spring cleaning is something we all do (or mean to do). Whether we do it in spring or before a big holiday or family visit there’s nothing like a good “clear out”.Whatever the real start of Spring Cleaning, getting rid of stuff and doing some deep cleaning does seems to awaken an overall sense of doing good as you clear out the bad. So add to that “do good” feeling by donating unwanted items as you do your spring cleaning.
