Student’s Corner

The University of Rochester was recently mentioned (albeit briefly) in an article about an increase of green jobs in upstate New York. Governor Cuomo announced that New York will invest $225 million towards developing clean energy in Buffalo. The RiverBend project, run by SUNY’s Research Foundation, is a 1.7 billion dollar research campus that will house large components of two major California technology companies. One produces LED lighting and the other makes solar panels. The project promises to bring at least 850 jobs to the area, and is set to open in 2015. It is being built on 200 acres of reclaimed land in South Buffalo. This is exciting news for Buffalo, which some believe could one day become a center for green energy development. RIT, University of Rochester and University of Buffalo are esteemed centers of engineering research, and thus produce a slew of talented engineers. This project is considered the beginning of a promising future of nanotechnology development, and guarantees more local jobs for engineering graduates. It is also predicted that RiverBend will encourage other green technology companies to develop in the area, spurring long-term economic growth. Additionally, the City of Buffalo and Buffalo Urban Development Corporation also plans to aid in environmental restoration of the Buffalo River. 1. This is good news. Buffalo has been severely economically depressed for some time now, experiencing high unemployment, high crime, etc. Any step in the right direction is most welcome.
