Student’s Corner

What does a phone book mean to you? Most likely it is just something sitting on top of a shelf, taking up unnecessary space and collecting dust in your home. To Kelly Murray, however, it is the graphite to her ultimate diamond. High fashion doesn’t always come at a high price. Kelly designed a dress made out of nothing but monochromatic pages of phone books. This gorgeous dress ( shown on the right) came from paper! As we all know, paper is extremely delicate material.  It is certainly not design to be use for fashion. How did she manage to put together a fabulous dress? Kelly happily admitted that she “pleated, stuck, sewed, and glued everything by hand.” Thus, she proudly claimed the credit of this exquisite masterpiece all to herself. To those of you who are still in awe, it is indeed a wearable and functional dress. It looks like there is another place for the phone book besides a recycling can.

The next time you pick up a phone book and ready to abandon it, you might want to think again. Through pages and pages of seemingly useless names and numbers, do you see a hidden masterpiece like Kelly?
