Clay’s Green Corner

Greetings from the Corner. Our usual smart-alec approach to Fridays shall be suspended so we can discuss the devastation happening half a world away. Earlier today Japan suffered an 8.9 magnitude earthquake 230 miles from Tokyo. This powerful quake has generated massive tsunamis and is continuing to cause death and destruction throughout the Pacific.

It’s a sad reminder that life on our planet is so very, very fragile; and the earth is also very, very volatile. Fortunately Japan is a country well-prepared to handle earthquakes (through building codes and preparation), but tsunamis are tougher to deal with. Improvements in early warning systems have saved countless lives. But we also know thousands will perish.

In the hyper-speed information age, we see immediately what is happening 13,000  miles away.  And we feel so helpless and powerless. I’m sure in the hours, days and weeks that follow, we’ll gain a better understanding of these forces of nature and how we can better prepare. In the meantime, check out your favorite international response agencies/charities and dig a little deeper to help out. Be aware that some “charitable groups” may be scamming. Some humans are not at their best during a crisis and will look to exploit those in need to feed their greed.

Do what you can. Do the best you can. One planet, one people.
