Clay’s Corner

Happy New Year to you and mama earth! Quick, look to your left and you’ll see a changed picture. From now on Clay’s Cormer will be written by Willow (as in Willow from Buffy the Vampire Slayer). Even though she’s only one year old, she’s pretty much on board with making the world a better place.

Actually, one of our New Year’s resolution was to adopt an animal from a shelter. Willow is a welcome sister to Frankie and Clayton and it just feels great to open up our home and heart to an animal that needs it.

So, what are your resolutions? Do you set your sights real high and then give up too soon (yes, I am including me. I don’t make resolutions, I break ’em). To be really successful, we need to not set ourselves up for failure. We can make a small scale resolution and exercise patience. And most importantly not punish ourselves when we slip up. We can do this.

Since this is an environmental blog, let’s try some eco-friendly resolutions, okay. And if you are already doing some earth-saving activities since January 1, The Corner would love to hear from you.

1. Finish cleaning-up from the holidays? What are you doing with the ‘old stuff’ that new gifts replaced? Well, think once, twice, three times before you throw stuff out. Maybe this is something that can be used for a different purpose, such as ceremic/plastic dishes can be used to hold plants, and old flatware can be used for gardening. Don’t forget to donate your old stuff to Goodwill, the Salvation Army and other organizations.

2. Make a firm commitment to purchase locally grown fruits and veggies.

3. Start to stock up on eco-friendly cleaning supplies. These products can be a bit more expensive, but the benefit to the environment is worth it (beware of ‘greenwashing’; make sure you read labels carefully.

Those are just three examples where you can make a big difference by doing something small. And if you slip up, there’s always tomorrow. Good luck and here’s to a greener 2011.

Just thought I’d share a couple of web sites that were helpful to me:
