Fa-la-la-la-la, Fa-la-la-la….Oh Christmas tree, Oh Christmas tree…..everybody sing!
Um, okay, maybe not. Holidays are upon us faithful readers, so let’s see what sustainable practices we can embrace during this season.
Do you still purchase a live Christmas tree? Even though the artificial ones are so ‘life-like’ there is nothing matching the aroma of fresh pine in our homes. So, if you still buy, what do you do with it after? Many communities offer to recycle trees. If you are not sure how your community handles trees, call your local or county environmental services office and ask.
Did you know there is a National Christmas Tree Association? You do now and here’s their web site: http://www.christmastree.org/recycle.cfm
If you do recycle your tree here are a few things that can be done with the materials: preserving, maintaining wildlife habitats, grinding into mulch for gardens, restoring dunes that have eroded, rebuilding the Louisiana coastline, sent back into industry as packing material and converting the trees into fuel for heat and electricity.
It’s nice to know that once the holiday season is over, your dedication to recycling your tree pays off. Remember, don’t trash it, recycle it.
