We are all into new technology and love what we can do with it. But can we be high tech and green? The answer is yes! One way to be green is to use green cables in your home theater, gaming devices and computers. Here in University Facilities and Services, we have begun using green cables.
So what is a green cable? Green cables are manufactured to specific standards, one such standard is RoHS. The RoHS stands for “the Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances in electrical and electronic equipment”. This directive, adopted in Europe in February 2003, bans the placing on the European market of new electrical and electronic equipment containing more than set levels of lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyl (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) flame retardants. Although a similar regulation is unlikely in the near future, these products are available in the US.
The benefit of green cables extends beyond the useful life of the product. Once disposed of, the cables won’t leach hazardous materials into our landfills. In addition, green cables provide excellent quality and performance.
