Greetings from blog-chester, eco-buds. Summer means lots of things to all of us: vacations, beaches, mountains, funnin’ and sunin’, spending quality time outdoors, picnics and of course summer wouldn’t be complete without pests trying to be the fly in the ointment (puns are the lowest form of humor. I love puns). Today let’s chat about what to do about pests. Now, remember we’re talking about the creepy crawlers, flying bombers, plant eating, and garden wrecking creatures. We’ll save time for two-legged pests for the future…….
I don’t know about you but I hate to see commericials for insectisides, herbicides, etc. I know they are much safer now. I also know there are alternatives. UR Grounds under the management of Dan Schied has implemeted an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program. IPM means we carefully manage our eco-systems and use as little intervention as possible. We have been recognized with awards for our IPM program. IPM isn’t easy and does require constant monitoring and committment. It’s worth it and our campuses reflect the beauty of all of nature and the hard work that accompanies such an environment. We have used some pretty innovative methods in controlling pests. Email Dan Schied at Dan.Schied@rochester.edu for detailed information.
