Kathleen Perkins is the Chair of the BIO5 Institute at the University of Arizona and is recognized for her original thinking and leadership in the international optics community. Through branding and business outreach, Perkins has drawn attention to the broad applications of optics. She worked at BRO from 1995 to 2007 and, as a vice president of Sales and Marketing and later CEO, she helped the company to increase its 2003 revenue by more than 75% the following year.

A new group is being launched at the University of Rochester – the Women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Entrepreneurship (WiSTEE) group. Its mission is to promote women leadership in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Entrepreneurship, bridge the gap between Science and Business, and provide a forum to learn, connect and lead.

Jessica DeGroote Nelson is the Research and Development Manager of Optimax Systems, Inc., an optical components manufacturer dedicated to small volume, high quality and quick delivery. She joined Optimax in 2007 after graduating from the University of Rochester’s Institute of Optics with a bachelor’s, masters and Ph.D. in Optics. She is also currently an adjunct faculty at The Institute of Optics at the University of Rochester teaching a course on Optical Fabrication and Testing.
During the past five years at Optimax, Jessica has not only expanded and improved the internal optical manufacturing processes, but has also won five Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) awards and is leading the research on these initiatives, as well as authoring more than 20 white papers on her findings.
Jessica is also an active member and presenter with the Optical Society of America (OSA), SPIE, American Ceramic Society (ACerS) and the American Society of Precision Engineers (ASPE).

Rachel Won is a Senior Editor at Nature Photonics. Before joining Nature Photonics in 2006, Dr. Won worked for Aston University’s Business Partnership Unit in Birmingham, UK, as a research commercialization officer. She obtained her PhD in microwave photonics and nonlinear optics as a member of Aston’s Photonics Research Group. Prior to that, she worked for Philips Optical Storage in Singapore as an Optics Engineer. She holds a Master’s degree from Nanyang Technological University of Singapore doing research in optical fiber sensing and a Bachelor’s degree from the National University of Malaysia.

Kristin Vogt is Product Marketing Manager for Edmund Optics. She received a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering with a concentration in Optics from the University of Rochester in 2005. She’s been with EO since then, working her way from Applications Engineering to Product Marketing. In her current role she interfaces between engineering and marketing to present products in a way that is useful to customers. This includes both the print and online catalogs, technical notes and product demonstrations. She also spent two years in the Singapore office working with the technical support, sales, and marketing teams in Asia.
