About The Trek
In the fourth year of the Dix Trek, Steph Taylor and Ted Hancock will lead six freshman up the sixth highest peak in New York State! Located in the eastern part of the Adirondacks, the Dix range consists of five peaks: Dix, Macomb, East Dix, South Dix, and Hough. At a total elevation of 4857 feet, the Dix range will be a pretty challenging hike. We will hike to a campsite about three miles from Elk Lake, stay overnight, complete the 11 mile loop, and then hike back out. We ascend over 2800 feet during the 11 mile loop to reach the Dix peak, which has 360 degree views of the rest of the high peaks. From the top, we are able to see Mount Marcy, Whiteface, Giant, Algonquin, the Wolfjaw range, and the beautiful Keene Valley. If you like awesome views, fun terrain, and ill timed Dix jokes, this is the trek for you!

Trek Leaders

Hey all, I’m a (rising) Senior Environmental Health Major here at the U of R. This is my third year leading a UR FOOT trek, and my first time on the Dix Range! My freshman year I explored Letchworth on Day Treks, cycled back the next year as a leader for cycling, and scaled shear rock faces last year while leading Rock Climbing. As you can tell, I love this club and the great outdoors – enough to have been co-president with (the ever-so lovely) Tarin Rickett last year! A perfect day outside for me would typically involve my skis or mountain bike, but I’m always pumped for some backpacking!

Hi guys! My name is Steph and I am going to be a senior this year here at UR! I’m so excited to start it off with leading the Dix Range Trek! On campus, I am on the UR Women’s Varsity Rowing Team, a member of Alpha Phi, and co-prez with Iain for this cool club called URFoot 🙂 I absolutely love the outdoors! Over the past few years I’ve backpacked the Coast-to-Coast Trail of England, I did the Via di San Francesco Pilgrimage in Italy, last summer I did a NOLS study abroad in Norway and Sweden. Throughout my childhood I spent my summers traveling to all 49 continental states with my family having fun in the outdoors. I am hoping after graduation to pursue Outdoor Education as a career. I am so excited to meet all of this year’s trekees! Get ready for an awesome time!
