Green Your Halloween

Halloween is upon us, and it is time to start thinking about costumes, candy, and other fun fall activities. However, many aspects of Halloween are unnecessarily wasteful, making the holiday even more scary. Here are a few ways to be more environmentally conscious this Halloween.

1.)Switch up your candy choices!

Instead of giving out the same candy as everyone else, try buying an organic brand, which doesn’t use pollutive pesticides. Also give out snacks that don’t use excessive plastic packaging.

2.) Make your own costume!

Many people have old clothes lying around that could be repurposed into a creative, one-of-a-kind costume. Thrift and consignment stores are also a great resource for finding gently used costumes, or different components that could be added to a costume. Buying a brand new costume every year creates extra waste, and relies on fast-fashion, which is a highly pollutive industry.

3.) Reuse your candy bag!

Instead of buying a brand new bag for trick or treating, use something you already own like a canvas tote bag or a pillowcase.

4.) Eat your pumpkin!

Don’t let your pumpkin rot on your porch for weeks! Instead, scoop out the seeds and roast them for a delicious snack. Roast the pumpkin itself and make a pumpkin soup, or add to a puree for a pumpkin pie.
