DON’T BUY A CAR; SHARE ONE

Now, there are many ways to reap the benefits of having a car without having to pay for insurance, gas, maintenance, and for the actual car itself. These ways of getting around are more sustainable because they don’t require more cars on the road than are actually necessary, and sharing cars often means that things are more efficient (instead of two people driving to the same place in separate cars, they can share one car and reduce the impact on the environment).

A really awesome service that has emerged and grown rapidly within the past decade is ridesharing apps. Apps like Lyft and Uber allow you to catch a ride to wherever you need to go right from your phone.

Services like Zimride allow you to even set up recurring rides, such as carpools to work. These can be really useful tools in developing relationships that reduce everyone’s impact on the environment.

Finally, there are services like Zipcar that allow you to share the actual car itself. These are basically just car rental services which can be really nice if you have a group large enough to fill a car, or you need to go multiple places.

All of these options can be really useful tools when you need to go exactly where you need to go in a timely fashion (instead of taking public transportation, biking, walking, etc.) but don’t need your own car.
