Announcing Shred Fest 2017

On Friday, July 21, University Facilities and Services will host the Seventh Annual Shred Fest. The event will take place from 6:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Zone 3 South. University employees, faculty, staff, and students are invited and encouraged to drop off any and all unwanted personal documents to be securely shredded and recycled. With the help of Iron Mountain, bank statements, tax records, bills, files, newspapers, magazines, and more will be securely shredded onsite.

Justifiably, many people fear that home disposal of important documents will put their personal or confidential information at risk. Instead of throwing your documents into a trash can, curbside recycling bin, or hoarding them at home, bring them to Shred Fest!  There, your personal information will be destroyed and handled in an eco-friendly way.

During the event, volunteers will be standing by to help unload your car. Boxes and plastic bags will be recycled too! All documents will be placed in a locked container. Once the containers are full, they are sent up a chute into an Iron Mountain truck to be securely shredded. You can even monitor your documents being shredded through the video camera right on the Iron Mountain shredding truck! If you wish to witness your documents being securely shredded, simply request the viewing when you are met by our volunteers. Please allow extra time for viewing.

There is no limit to how many personal documents you can drop off. Last year a total of 18,220 pounds was collected, making it the second largest collection out of all six paper shredding events held at the University! It is not necessary to remove staples, paper clips, or rubber bands from the documents. However, please refrain from bringing phone books, hardcover books, plastics, metals, trash, or departmental items. Please be advised that there will be a period of time when the truck will need to be emptied and will not be on site due to the large amount of paper normally collected during the event. During this period, documents will be locked securely in containers until the truck returns.

Like past Shred Fests, the event will take place in Zone 3 South (formally known as Park Lot). To get to Zone 3 South by car from the Medical Center:

  1. Head south on Elmwood Ave. and take a right onto Wilson Blvd. to enter the River Campus
  2. Take your first right (before the information booth) onto Trustee Road
  3. Take another right onto Intercampus Drive
  4. Drive across the bridge over Elmwood Ave.
  5. Park Lot will be to the right. Signs will be posted to help direct you.
