How to Extend Your Smartphone Battery Life

Every night, I have to plug in my iPhone to charge it. If I don’t, I’ll wake up to a phone that will only get me through about an hour of the day, and then I’m stranded with a dead battery. Definitely not the worst thing in the world, but there has to be a way to preserve your phone’s battery, which would allow you to use your charger less frequently. And less time with your phone on charge equals less electricity that you’re using. So what are some ways to save your battery while saving the world? Check out these simple tips:

  • Turn off your Wi-Fi  If you’re not using it, turn off your Wi-Fi!
  • Turn off your 3G/4G  Just like #1, when you’re somewhere without Wi-Fi, turn off your 3G or 4G when you’re not using it.
  • Turn off your Bluetooth  Are you noticing a trend? When not in use, turn your Bluetooth off so that your phone isn’t constantly trying to pair with nearby devices.
  • Keep your screen dim  Changing the brightness settings so that your screen is dimmer will save you a ton of battery.
  • Shorten your screen time-out    Go into your settings and shorten the amount of time it takes for your screen to time out. This way, when you’re not using your phone, the screen will turn off and save you some battery power.
  • Close apps when you’re done with them   Don’t just leave your apps running in the background; make sure to close out of them fully.
  • Extend your refresh time  If you have your email set to automatically load new mail, try extending the refresh time to 15 minutes rather than 5 minutes.
  • Turn off push notifications  Push notifications require power, so turn them off! You can still check your favorite apps when you want to, but you won’t be constantly bombarded with notifications that someone liked your photo from 3 months ago.
  • Keep it clean  Keep the ports where you plug in your charger clean.
  • Watch the temperature  Don’t let your phone get above 95 degrees Fahrenheit, and try to limit your phone use when you’re out in the cold.
  • Don’t charge unnecessarily  You should only charge your phone when it’s almost out of battery – usually 10% battery or less. And try to avoid overcharging your phone by taking it off the charger once it reaches 100%.
