SAVE THE DATE: 5TH ANNUAL SHRED FEST

University Facilities and Services is holding its Fifth Annual Shred Fest on Friday, July 17th from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm. All University of Rochester employees and students are invited to bring any unwanted personal documents, including, but not limited to: bank statements, tax records, bills, and old files that need to be securely shredded and recycled. Iron Mountain will arrive on site in Park Lot at 7:00 am to begin shredding documents. Previous events have yielded overwhelming results, and during last year’s Shred Fest over 8 tons of paper was shredded over the course of 8 hours!

Understandably, many people fear that their personal or confidential information is at risk when they throw important documents into a curbside recycling bin. Instead of throwing your documents into a trash can or hoarding them at home, the Shred Fest offers the perfect solution. Rest assured that your personal information will be destroyed and also handled in an ecofriendly way, by being recycled instead of sent to a landfill. Upon entering the event, volunteers will be standing by to help unload your car. All documents will be securely locked into a container until it is time to shred them. Once full, the containers are sent up a chute into the truck to be securely shredded. You can even monitor your documents being shredded through the video camera right on the Iron Mountain shredding truck. If you wish to witness your documents being securely shredded, simply request the viewing when you are met by our volunteers. Please allow extra time for viewing.

There is no limit to how much paper you drop off. Paper and file folders of any color are welcome. It is not necessary to remove staples, paper clips or rubber bands. But, please refrain from bringing any phone books, hardcover books, plastics, metals, trash, or departmental items. These items will not be accepted. This is an excellent way to finish your spring cleaning; get rid of those piles of paper that have been accumulating for too long!

Please be advised that there will be a period of time when the truck will need to be emptied and will not be on site. During this period, documents will be locked securely until the truck returns. The truck may also have to leave the site early if fills again before the anticipated time of 3:00 pm, but documents will be kept in locked totes and secured until they can be picked up for shredding.

Like past Shred Fests, the event will take place in Park Lot. To get to Park Lot by car from the Medical Center: (1) Head south on Elmwood Ave. and take a right onto Wilson Blvd. to enter the River Campus (2) Take your first right (before the information booth) onto Trustee Road (3) Take another right onto Intercampus Drive (4) Drive across the bridge over Elmwood Ave. (5) Park Lot will be to the right. Signs will be posted to help direct you.

  1. I like that you talked about how you can keep important and confidential information secured by shredding them. My husband has a lot of paperwork in our library which he wants to dispose of. He told me that these documents contain sensitive information, and it’s important for him not to compromise the safety of the information in his documents once he disposes of them, so it will make sense for him to shred them instead. I will make sure to contact a professional shredding company for help.

  2. This is a great enterprise. We will get more info from is the post. It helps us to utilize waste and conscious about our environment. Hi, Akadrie, thanks for sharing this idea.
