Last week I had the opportunity to check out the newest art exhibit by the artist Mayumi Amada in the Hartnett Gallery. It is called Poetic Sentiment, and it featured almost entirely recycled materials.

The official description of the show states: “This show focuses on life within an eternal flow of time. Mayumi Amada explores the idea of mortality in eternity and eternity in mortality with her poetic statement. The use of the doily symbolizes the repetition of generations and the passage of time. Flowers whisper about ephemeral beauty. Recycled materials modestly enhance the theme. The triangle of the theme, image, and materials integrate the show.”

I found this to be an exciting exhibit, as discerning which materials were used was challenging. The artist had repurposed them in beautiful and unexpected ways. Additionally, there was an interactive portion for the viewer to engage with the work.

The piece pictured above was made of the bottoms of plastic water bottles, and with the fan blowing in the background, they danced gently, resembling a sea of uniform jellyfish.

I highly recommend paying a visit to the gallery! This exhibit closes on March 15.
