Welcome Students!

Recycling InSTALLment and Go Green Sticker
Recycling InSTALLment and Go Green Sticker

Happy Labor Day everyone! We hope you are all enjoying the holiday. UR students are enjoying one last hoorah before classes begin tomorrow and it’s time to get serious. Here at the Recycling Office, we are certainly celebrating our labors, especially with all the work put in the past several weeks to prepare for students to be back on campus.

Each summer we go through all of the residence halls and put our educational Recycling 101 “inSTALLments” into each and every bathroom stall. It takes quite some time, but is definitely worth it considering each year we hear from students how much they learn from the insSTALLments. After all, once confined to a stall, we have quite the captive audience! This year we also tried something new to promote our programs. Every student will receive in their room a Go Green sticker to put on their laptop or elsewhere to show that they support sustainability on campus. Our stickers, of course were made out of recycled content. We are very curious to see how people like them.

Last Monday, we had the pleasure of meeting the new freshmen EcoReps charged with not only learning all the ropes of going to college, but also being a leader amongst their peers to support sustainability on campus. We made sure they were well trained in the how-to’s of the three R’s on campus and are looking forward to working more with them this year. What an awesome group!!

Then, on Tuesday we welcomed the class of 2017 at the Freshmen EXPO. This year our table featured everything you need to know about going green on campus. We had our first ever recycling video created by interns, Melissa Kullman and Lauren Henry, on display for all to see. We promise our video will entain you and inform you. As a gift from Facilities and Services, we gave away solar powered key chain lights in multiple color options. They are multi-functional, sustainable and smart!

To conclude our move-in events, we participated in the Green Orientation program put together by Dining’s Team Green. We tested the new class’s knowledge with our recycling sorting game and offered a prize to participants. We were joined by other groups including GreenSpace, Grassroots, Waste Management, Campus Planning, Design and Construction Management and more. What fun!!

We sincerely welcome the new freshman class to the University of Rochester and hope your experience here is valuable on many levels. We also welcome back returning upperclassman and are looking forward to seeing some of the familiar faces again!
