PGMS Salutes University of Rochester Medical Center for Grounds Management Excellence

PGMS Past President Donald Bottger, CGM; Mike Miller Supervisor University of Rochester Horticulture and Grounds; Daniel Schied Manager University of Rochester Horticulture and Grounds, CGM

BALTIMORE (November 2012) – The Professional Grounds Management Society (PGMS) recognized The University of Rochester Medical Center in Rochester, N.Y. with an Honor Award in the Society’s 2012 Green Star Awards competition. The award was given in the Hospital or Institution category for exceptional grounds maintenance. Winners were honored during the Society’s 2012 Awards Dinner held Oct. 26 in conjunction with the School of Grounds Management & GIE+EXPO in Louisville, Ky., Oct. 24-27.

The University of Rochester Medical Center is a dynamic institution including Strong Memorial Hospital, the School of Medicine and Dentistry, the School of Nursing, the Wilmot Cancer Center, and a LEEDS Certified Center for Translational Sciences. With over 10,000 employees and an equal number of patients and visitors, the Medical Center requires constant attention to detail for litter and debris in the warm months, and around the clock snow removal in the winter season. The main entrance to Strong Memorial Hospital welcomes staff, patients and visitors with curvilinear planting beds, a dry stream bed and annual/perennial flower installations throughout the entry median. Borders of color surround visitors as they enter the School of Nursing from Crittenden Blvd. The east corner of Helen Wood Hall provides a calming respite with flowering trees and shrubs, picnic tables and benches amid a bustling Medical Center and cityscape. The first bio-detention pond (rain garden) installation on the Medical Center campus sits at the edge of a porous pavement parking lot and LEEDS Gold Saunders Research Building.

The Green Star Awards program brings national recognition to grounds maintained with a high degree of excellence, complimenting other national landscape award programs that recognize outstanding landscape design and construction. Overall, PGMS presented four Grand Awards, its highest honor, as well as nine Honor Awards and five Merit Awards in six categories of competition.

  1. This is really an appreciable event. We need to encourage all the people and institutions that are involved in any activities that can make our environment better; and grounds management is an important activity without a doubt.
