Clay’s Green Corner

Happy Arbor Day everyone! Today, you may proudly exit your closet and show the world that being a ‘tree-hugger’ is a lifestyle that is beautiful, healthy, and benefits anyplace in and around your neighborhood on this wonderful planet. Celebrated the last Friday in April in the United States, Arbor Day was born and bred right here in the states in 1872. Now a world-wide event held at different times of the year depending on the climate, countries all around the world hold events large and small as a way of giving something back to mom earth. I’m sure our international students as well as faculty and staff from around the world embrace this chance to share in something so worthwhile.

Strolling around the internet, the Corner found a great site that covers all things ‘green’, all year long. When you get the chance (and always after reading The Green Dandelion), stop by The Daily Green. It’s a great one-stop place to get that green adrenaline flowing.

At The University of Rochester we celebrate Arbor Day by turning it into a weekend of mature, fun-filled events (guess which word doesn’t belong) called Dandelion Day. Planting a tree? You betcha! But that’s not all we do. We also look for creative ways of saving existing trees, too. Here are a few ways you can celebrate Arbor Day all year long: purchase recycled paper (that’s the ‘duh’ factor to get you started), jump off the junk mail not-so-merry-go-round. The Daily Green and other web sites have info on how you can end the junk mail avalanche, along with that get used to paying bills electronically too. The Corner must admit she has a difficult time with that last suggestion; but we’re trying.

No matter how you decide to pay tribute to our home, take comfort in the fact that YOU are deciding to be part of the solution. I hope you are as proud of yourselves as The Green Corner is of you.

Happy 140th Birthday, Arbor Day. You look marvelous. Long may you run.
